A cognitive assessment ascertains whether an individual does indeed have a condition such as Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and / or Dyscalculia. The assessment can also highlight if the individual has a high probability for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

A cognitive assessment also provides a reliable measure of strengths, difficulties and potential opportunities and how these relate to job roles and work performance. This can also be useful for those with conditions such as depression or cognitive impairments.

An Occupational Psychologist can diagnose Dyslexia, DCD, Dyscalculia and is able to identify typical ADHD difficulties in the workplace, though usually this also includes a referral to a GP to ensure that there are no medical issues related to the condition.

Autistic Spectrum Condition, Tourette’s Syndrome and other neurodiverse issues such as anxiety and depression should be formally diagnosed in by a specialist clinician. A cognitive assessment is, however, very useful for establishing how the conditions affect work performance and identifying strengths.

An Occupational Psychologist will deliver a series of cognitive ability tests, examining verbal and non-verbal skills as well as literacy and fine motor control. These take between 2 to 4 hours. The psychologist will also ask about early development and education, to build up a good picture of how the person has experienced both difficulties and strengths over time.

We look at:

• Developmental, education and working histories

• Difficulties and strengths in working short term and long term memory

• The variations in scores for the ability tests

The results of all the above help us to form a diagnosis.

Our psychologists provide feedback to our clients during the session. This will be a brief overview of what we are noticing so far, and what can be done. We then deliver a report to our clients. We let the individual check and understand the report before forwarding a summary to the employer, completing the process within 10 working days of the assessment. The summary will have details of the diagnosis, strengths and weaknesses and what to do about it, but not personal history and IQ scores.

We always give the option of a follow up phone call or meeting because the most important thing to us is that you understand your report.

There will be some recommendations that you can put into place immediately. There will also be some follow up resources to explore.

In order to be thorough about reasonable adjustments, you will need a workplace needs assessment. This is because reasonable adjustments have to take into account the individual’s ability AND the demands of their job. For this we have to talk to managers, look at the work space and tools used and much more.
